One year ago, under the grey Scottish sky. Perhaps not the year we planned, definitely not the one we dreamt up, but one I would not swap for any other.
It may have been brief, it may have been the wet type, but it still managed to make the whole of London smile this morning.
Can’t go to Italy so consoling myself with making amaretti and drinking espresso when the sun is out. And when the sun goes down it’s negroni hour.
Somehow in a year of darkness and sadness, my top nine is full of joy, beautiful light, risen dough, fluffy cats and the most memorable trips of my lifetime (I am looking at you Scotland and Strasbourg). Not shown is the long shifts on covid response, the special type of pandemic gallows humour, the tears of exhaustion and despair and the miles walked around South London. Brexit, the thread woven uninterrupted through the last four years of my life has sneaked itself into the centre image, rather appropriately.
Winter light, SW1. Rarely seen, but always worth the wait.
Good Sunday morning from SW2 test kitchen where we are making hollandaise, kimchi and panettone practically at the same time. I was clever and put the bread in the oven just before we got out of bed. All this is happening on what I estimate to be 32 sq ft. 2020 has definitely been the year of kitchen experiments.
